DOT: Two injured, lane closures expected after crane arm hits highway overpass

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Two people were injured Friday morning while driving near DeForest after the arm of a crane extended and hit an overpass, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) said.
Initial reports from the DOT – De Forest Post say that the crane truck was traveling south around 11:40 a.m. on I-39/90 near DeForest when the boom arm of the crane extended, striking the overpass.
This initial collision caused the crane truck to roll on its side, injuring the driver. State Patrol officials said a second vehicle also struck the debris on the bridge, which caused minor injuries to that driver.
Dane County Sheriff as well as DeForest Police Department, Dane County Highway Department, DeForest Fire and EMS and Sun Prairie EMS responded to the collisions.
Wisconsin State Patrol Officials said the southbound lanes of I-39 near Windsor, as well as the River Road overpass, are closed as DOT officials inspect the bridge. Lane closures are expected to last several hours while the crash is cleaned up.
The designated alternate route is County Hwy V east to US Hwy 51 south to State Hwy 19 west.
Telehandler forklift falls in Jefferson Hills, injuring two

JEFFERSON HILLS, Pa. —
A Skytrak Telehandler toppled over in Jefferson Hills on Wednesday, injuring two workers.
Allegheny County 911 confirmed the fall occurred at 4:24 p.m. Sky 4 flew over the scene on Royal Court.
Video from Sky 4 showed the four-wheel telehandler, which is a type of forklift used to lift and move heavy items, toppled over in an attempt to install a swimming pool at a home.
Chris Bailey, owner of C.A. Bailey Excavating & Hauling, operated the equipment during the accident. His company is subcontracted by Skyview Pools to install in-ground swimming pools.
“When it toppled over, it almost felt like I was airborne for 10 minutes,” Bailey said. “I was in the air, but inside the machine holding to the steering wheel. When it hit the ground, it threw me into the roll bar and through the window.”
Bailey says the telehandler is 12,000 pounds, four times the weight of the swimming pool, and it was harnessed with four nylon slings.
However, he says one of the Skyview pool workers tried to redirect the pool toward the hole where it would be installed, but it swung back in the opposite direction, downhill, pulling the telehandler to the ground.
One person was transported by air, the other by ground.
“I was working in the basement. Me and my wife both work from home, and just all of a sudden heard a loud boom. I mean, it sounded like thunder. I thought there was maybe a storm in the area,” John Pisarek said. “I ran outside and saw the crane over and the guys on the ground and went over to help as much as I could.”
Pisarek said when he got to them, they were conscious and speaking.
“Hopefully, they’re both OK. Really good guys,” Pisarek said.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration said an investigation into the accident started Thursday morning, and it must be completed within six months.
Fines are pending the outcome of the investigation.
Skyview Pools & Spas issued a statement Thursday morning saying, “both men are doing well and resting. No other details to be released.”
Small Crane Collapses in Downtown Newark

Newark officials are investigating the cause of a crane collapse that happened at a location in downtown Newark this afternoon.
The small cranes collapsed outside 587 Broad Street around 2:07 p.m.
Firefighters were first on the scene and found a front load crane down inside a large hole on the sidewalk with two males suffering non-fatal injuries.
The victims were assisted at the scene by firefighters and then transported to the hospital for treatment.
The cause of the collapse has not been determined at this time.
