Step by Step Guide to getting your RI Hoisting Engineer License
Time needed: 45 days
How to Get for your RI Hoisting Engineer’s License, brought to you by Cranes101 after consulting directly with the RI DLT:
- Fill out the RI DLT (Department of Labor and Training) application to take the Hoisting Engineer License test
- Prepare to take the exam
Cranes101 offers convenient online courses as well as in-person training. You can start this training at any time.
- Take the state-scheduled exam
Once you feel well-prepared, contact RI DLT to sign up for the exam. This is scheduled directly with the state, and you will receive additional information once your application is processed. The state runs the test in person each month.
- Pass the exam (…or not)
A passing score is 70%.
If you don’t pass the first time, you can repeat steps 1-3 above until you do. And if you want to keep studying, you can – our online course has no time limit, and as yours to access for as long as you need it. - Pay for your license
Once you pass (congrats!), you will need to go to DLT in person to pay for and receive your license. You can (and probably should) do this as soon as you pass the exam.
- More info on timing that the DLT mentioned we should share with you:
The test is generally run once a month, towards the end of the month with the exception of December. Once your application is received and processed, you will be placed in the next available exam. The shortest possible time to go from application to license in hand could be about 4.5 weeks, if you hit the timing just right. This is unlikely, and the average is more like 6 weeks (which is why we put 45 days as the “time to complete”). If you were to apply in mid-November after seats for the November had already filled up, there would be no test for you to take until the end of January, so it could be up to 10 weeks as a worst case scenario.
